Dr. Joseph Altson Miller, Sr., 87, of 1319 East Cambridge Avenue, Greenwood, South Carolina died Monday, February 5, 2018 at his home.

Born in Williamsburg, County, on August 17, 1930.  He was the seventh and last child of the late Charlie and Kiziah Miller.

He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Gourdin, South Carolina and later joined Good Hope Baptist Church in Greeleyville, South Carolina.

Dr. Miller served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1952.  While serving, he received the Army Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal.

From there, he enrolled in and received his B. S. degree from Allen University and his Doctorate of Dentistry from Howard University.  He then relocated to Greenwood where he practiced dentistry for several decades.

Dr. Miller also served as a past president of the Greenwood/Ninety-Six  N.A.A.C.P. and the American Legion Post 224.

He is preceded in death by his son, Dr. Joseph Alston Miller, Jr.

He is survived by a daughter, Audrey Henderson of Simpsonville, South Carolina; two grandchildren, Alyssa and Michael Henderson of Simpsonville, South Carolina and a host of relatives to mourn his passing.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Oakbrook Memorial Parks with the Reverend Michael Butler, officiating.

The family will receive friends on Monday, February 26, 2018 in the chapel of Parks Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m.
