Janie Elizabeth Dean Jones was born to the late Richard and Janie Williams Dean on April 20, 1943. God called her home on March 10, 2019. Liz, as she was affectionately known, married her high school sweetheart, Thomas R. Jones Sr., in 1963. They were married for 55 years.

Liz was born and raised in Greenwood, South Carolina. She graduated from Brewer High School and went on to attend Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. After her time at Benedict college, Liz moved to Wilmington (Los Angeles County), California where she lived briefly with her husband (Thomas) of the US Navy where his ship was homeported before they both returned to Greenwood. Liz and Thomas moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in 1972 preceded by other family members to start new roots in the Wilmington Community.

She worked for the New Hanover County School System for many years as a Teacher's Assistant. She also worked in retail before her retirement in 2002. In her spare time, Liz enjoyed playing the piano, crochet, gardening around the house, and looked forward each day to watching her two favorite shows (The Price is Right and Wheel of Fortune).

She was a devoted member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church for many years where she sang on the Senior Choir, played piano for the church choir, and was also a member of the Daughters of Zion.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories of her quiet strength, wisdom, and devotion to her family: her husband, Thomas R. Jones Sr., two sons: Thomas R. Jones Jr. and Richard B. Jones: two daughters, Andrea M. Bowens (Patrick) and Cassandra E. Johnson (Patrick "Marc" ): nine grandchildren Tavariz Moore, Seven Haywood, Kya Jones, Nya Jones, Zoey Jones, Richard B. Jones Jr., Patrick Bowens Jr. (McKenzie), Justin Bowens, and Brianna Bowens; and three great grandsons, Kayden, Kendrick and Kole Bowens.

A celebration of Mrs. Jones' life  will be conducted  at 1:30 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at Davis Funeral Home 901  S. 5th Avenue,  Wilmington, NC  28401. A visitation will be from 12:00 - 1:30 PM prior to the service.  Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
