A Life Well Lived

Doris Wooden Griffin, widow of Sloan Booker Griffin, Sr. transitioned peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, July 15, 2024. She was born on September 24, 1938, in Salley, SC, to her loving parents, Mr. John Wooden and Ruth Johnson Wooden.

Mrs. Griffin graduated from A. L. Corbett High School in Salley, SC in 1956. After high school she attended Denmark Technical College, Demark, SC and majored in Cosmetology.  While attending school, she met the love of her life, who later became her husband, Sloan B. Griffin. He was attending college to learn shoe repair.  Together they returned to Ninety-Six, SC to build a home to grow, raise and nurture their family.  They also owned and operated Ideal Shoe Shop in Greenwood, SC for over 50 years.  She was also employed by Neptune, Inc. for many years and JC Penney's.  Doris enjoyed the love and care of her husband for 38 years, until he passed away in 1997.

Mrs. Griffin was of the Baptist faith.  She was baptized and was a member of Smyma Baptist Church, Springfield, SC.  She served as a faithful member and would sang on the Young Adult Musical Choir and Ushered until she left for college and moved to Ninety-Six.  She moved her baptism letter from Smyma Baptist Church to Mt. Olive Baptist Church with her husband Sloan B. Griffin after they were married.  As often as she could, she would always visit her home church in Springfield, SC.

Mrs. Griffin was a faithful member and Deaconess at Mt. Olive Baptist Church until her declining health.  She was part of the Senior Choir, Usher Committee and the Kitchen Committee.  She loved her church and she would always speak about all the phone calls, visits and cards she would receive from her church family.

Doris enjoyed all the beautiful things on this earth and lived a happy and fulfilled life.  Her smile would always make you smile; her joy would make you joyful. Her favorite things were reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, traveling, shopping, spending time with her children, grandchildren, family and friends.  She never met a stranger, to know her was to love her.   She was a strict follower of the Golden Rule and she instilled in her children to do the same.  Doris enjoyed lifting people up and was a constant cheerleader for her family and friends.  She was blessed with a strong will and inner strength admired by those who knew her.  She continued to drive and take care of her home until her recent illness.  When told to slow down and take it easy by loved ones, she always said that while the Lord provided her the strength she would do for herself.

In additional to her parents and husband, Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by her seven siblings, Thomas Wooden, Curtis Wooden, James Wooden, D. C. Wooden, Landis Wooden, Connie Wooden and Myrtis Staley.

Mrs. Griffin leaves to cherish her memories, her loving children, one daughter, Terry (Larry) Adams, Ninety-Six, SC; two sons, Sloan (Ericka) Griffin, Greenwood, SC and Steve (Pamela) Griffin, Anderson, SC. She leaves three loving sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Ware, Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. Gloria Williams, Aiken, SC and Mrs. Barbara Gantt, Columbia, SC  and a special cousin, Vanessa Griffin.

Doris has ten devoted grandchildren to cherish her memories, Shikina (Travis) Aiken, Greenwood, SC; Antonie (Carrie) Chappelle, Greenwood, SC; Rico (Andrea) Adams, Ninety-Six, SC; Tasheema (Ricky) Squire, Ninety-Six, SC; Jarvis (Tennille) Griffin, Columbia, SC; Shun Griffin, Delaware, OH; Shay Rapley, Greenwood, SC; Tyson Griffin, Greenwood, SC; Zakiyya Cook and Deidra Griffin both of Greenwood, SC.

Mrs. Griffin has eleven great grandchildren that loved her dearly, Lennox Adams, Jala Squire, Kyndall Chappelle, Jasmine Aiken, Travis J. Aiken, Janiya Squire, Evan Adams, Katie Williams, Alexander Williams, Tykirea Johnson, Cruz Chappelle and Tristan Griffin.

Mrs. Griffin was also blessed to enjoy hugs from her great great grandson, Kiane Martin and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2 P.M. on Sunday, July, 21, 2024 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 501 Mt. Olive Road in Saluda, SC.

There will be no public viewing.

The family is at the home 101 Porter Drive, Ninety-Six, SC.
